I always try to include a nice mixture of photojournalistic and posed photos at each wedding and I'm more than happy to adjust the ratio to suit the preferences of the bride and groom. I think both are beautiful and help tell the story of the day. In this case, a photojournalistic approach helped capture the true joy of the bride and groom as they left the reception to the cheers of their family and friends and headed off to their honeymoon.

I love taking photos at wedding receptions. The wilder the better as far as I'm concerned! I think it's important for the photographer to be aggressive for these types of shots. I often wade right into the crowd on the dance floor and experiment with shootings from various angles to emphasize the action. Often I'll hold the camera high over my head, but in this case a low camera angle really did the trick!

I always encourage couples to allow some extra time for fun and creative portraits on their wedding day. Often these are some my favorite photos. Once the formal family and bridal party photos are done at the church I love to spend extra time with the bride and groom for some romantic photos, ideally at an alternate location. In this case, we had the good fortune to have the Capitol building in Washington DC as our backdrop. And at sunset! This couple did a really great job planning their wedding day schedule.

It's important for a wedding photographer to be as efficient as possible with time management as well as taking advantage of the available surroundings. In this case, I wanted to get a dramatic portrait of the bride and groom before they entered the reception, something different than the church photos. We didn't have time to go anywhere else so I had to make do with the hallway in the hotel! I'm really pleased with how this turned out.

The bride was running late and so her hair and makeup preparation was very rushed. Once she was dressed we only had a few moments before we had to hurry downstairs for the start of the ceremony. I always try to get a creative portrait of the bride whenever possible and I was very pleased with how this one turned out considering the extreme shortage of time. Many times a bride will apologize for all the craziness before the wedding. I always tell them I'm used to it and that a certain amount of craziness is normal for a wedding day!

This week's blog post really continues the previous discussion about the importance of capturing the details that make a wedding unique. I really love the vibrant colors in this photo and the beautifully soft natural light.

It seems like there's always something going on at wedding. With this seemingly never ending series of moments to be captured a photographer can never let his guard down and become lazy. Even though dinner was being served these two young girls were having a wonderful time on the dance floor. It's important to photograph kids at there own level, which in this case meant crawling around on the dance floor with them! They had a blast and so did I. Lighting was from a bounced on-camera flash in addition to a 2nd light triggered via radio frequency to light the background and provide more depth and dimension to the photo.
